SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

Spiritual Direction

The Way It Is

There’s a thread you follow.  It goes among

things that change. But it doesn’t change.

People wonder about what you are pursuing.

You have to explain about the thread.

But it is hard for others to see.

While you hold it you can’t get lost.

Tragedies happen; people get hurt

or die; and you suffer and get old.

Nothing you do can stop time's unfolding.

You don't ever let go of the thread.

WHAT IS SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?

Spiritual Direction (also known as Spiritual Guidance) is an intentional relationship and process dedicated to the growth of the spiritual life of a seeker. A person coming for spiritual direction (the seeker) meets with a spiritual director to explore their spiritual journey.  As the seeker reflects on their life and prayer, the spiritual director serves as a holy listener in a confidential, non-judgmental, and supportive setting.  A spiritual director does not "direct" or tell a seeker what to do or not do.  Rather, using the word "direction" implies an attentiveness to the ways in which the Spirit is working in the seeker's life.

The image of three chairs assists in describing the art and ministry of spiritual direction:  in one chair sits a seeker, longing for a deeper relationship with God, Higher Power, or Ultimate Reality.  The spiritual director is seated in the second chair---listening, inquiring, and holding the space for the seeker to encounter the 'true Spiritual Director' who occupies the third chair...Holy Presence.  Together, the seeker and spiritual director come to trust that Holy Presence is always available and offering guidance in every contemplative encounter of spiritual direction.

Spiritual direction is like panning for gold. A directee comes and together we dip into the stream of their life and pull up all kinds of things. Rocks of all sizes—-I can never guess what’s coming next—-all kinds of conflicts and problems, then all of a sudden some fleck or nugget of pure gold emerges into view in the bottom of the pan as we swirl the water around, emptying out the rocks.

The whole purpose of spiritual direction is to penetrate beneath the surface of our lives, get behind the facade of conventional gestures and attitudes which we present to the world and draw out our inner spiritual freedom.
— Thomas Merton

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION WITH BETH

Exploring your spirituality and the meaning of life, I offer a welcoming space and companionship on the journey for anyone yearning to grow spiritually---from any faith tradition or no faith tradition.  In addition to completing a two year program in Spiritual Direction, I have further training in discernment, forgiveness, and inner-body focusing/listening.  Sitting with others during times of transition, questioning, or deepening desire are a significant part of my ministry.

I am available for a single session, serving as a director for a directed retreat, or meeting regularly for on-going spiritual direction. Hour long appointments are scheduled ahead of time via email.  All sessions take place at either my private Home Office or in one of the spiritual direction rooms at Holy Wisdom Monastery.  For long distance seekers or those unable to travel, phone sessions are available.

My sliding fee scale is $50-$75 per one hour session.  If finances prevent you from having spiritual direction using this scale, I'm open to talking further with you to work out a rate you can afford.
